There comes a point in every believer’s journey when God begins to move us from comfort to conviction — from doing what feels easy to doing what builds our faith muscles. That shift is often marked by one word: obedience.
There’s something beautiful — and deeply unsettling — about obedience. It’s beautiful because it reflects trust, love, and surrender. Yet it’s unsettling because obedience often demands we do what’s uncomfortable, inconvenient, or even illogical. Yet obedience positions us for divine outcomes that convenience can never yield.
Take Abraham, for instance. God told him to leave everything familiar — his home, his culture, his security — and step into the unknown. Later, that same God asked him to sacrifice his long-awaited son of promise. Nothing about that was convenient. Nothing made sense. But Abraham obeyed and through his obedience, God established a covenant that blessed generations. This underscores the fact that obedience is never about the instruction alone; it’s about what God wants to produce in you through that instruction.
The Comfort Trap
We live in a world that celebrates comfort and convenience. Everything is designed to make life easier — fast food, instant transfers, one-click shopping, express deliveries. Unfortunately, that mindset often seeps into our walk with God.
We want instant answers, quick blessings, and effortless obedience. But spiritual growth doesn’t happen in comfort zones and God doesn’t develop character in ease; He refines it in obedience.
When God prompts you to forgive someone who hurt you deeply, convenience says, “They don’t deserve it.”
Obedience says, “I’ll forgive because He forgave me.”
When God nudges you to give sacrificially, convenience says, “But I have bills to pay.”
Obedience says, “Everything I have came from Him anyway.”
When God calls you to serve in obscurity, convenience says, “Nobody will notice.”
Obedience says, “God sees me, and that’s enough.”
Every time you choose obedience over convenience, heaven takes notice — and your faith grows roots.
The Heart Behind Obedience
True obedience isn’t driven by fear or obligation; it’s birthed from love and trust. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” John 14 vs 15
He didn’t say, “If you want Me to love you, obey Me.” His love is unconditional. Our obedience, however, is our love language back to Him.
Obedience is love in action. It’s choosing His way when your way feels easier. It’s saying, “Lord, not my will, but Yours be done” — even when His will stretches you.
Growing Pains and Glory
Every believer who desires to grow must confront this truth: obedience will cost you something. It might cost your pride, your comfort, your timing, or your preferences. But it will never cost you more than disobedience will. Jonah’s story is a vivid reminder. He ran from obedience and found himself in the belly of inconvenience — literally. When he finally surrendered, he saw the revival of an entire nation – Nineveh. The lesson? You can’t outswim God’s instructions.
Each act of obedience strengthens your spiritual muscles. It teaches you to trust God’s heart even when you can’t trace His hand. It transforms you from a believer who merely knows about God to one who truly walks with Him.
The Reward of Obedience
Obedience may not always bring immediate comfort, but it always brings lasting fruits. The road of obedience is often narrow, lonely, and uphill — but it leads to abundance, intimacy, and joy that convenience can never deliver. So the next time God asks something hard of you, pause and remember: He’s not testing your comfort; He’s growing your character. When you choose obedience over convenience, you’re not just proving your faith — you’re deepening it.
What is one area in your life God is calling you to obey today, even though it’s inconvenient? Scripture says, “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15 vs 22
As you choose to walk in obedience, say this word of prayer for yourself, “Lord, help me to value Your will above my comfort. Teach me to trust You even when obedience feels costly. Let my love for You be proven in every act of surrender, and may my faith grow deeper through every ‘yes’ I give You. Amen.” 🙏
