8 Essential Qualities of an Effective Church Worker

There are many parts but one body and when each part performs its function effectively, the whole body operates optimally.

Similarly, the success of the church is ultimately determined by the concerted efforts of the pastor(s) and church workers.

Much like any corporate organization worth its salt, there are qualities that make specific candidates suited for various positions. Today, we’ll take a look at 8 essential qualities that make you best suited for the position of a church worker.

1 – Be Born Again
Giving your life to Christ and accepting him into your heart as your Lord and Saviour is the first thing that qualifies you to serve in the capacity of a church worker. This is because if you do not acknowledge God’s existence, are not surrendered and completely devoted to him, you cannot truly serve him.

2 – Have an Intimate Relationship with God
It is crucial to remember that as a Christian and a church volunteer or worker, you are first and foremost serving God. Without having an intimate, continuing relationship with God, you cannot minister to him or others effectively.

3 – Have a Good Grasp of the Bible
The primary responsibility of a church worker is service – to God, the body of Christ and humanity. To be able to serve effectively, it becomes pertinent that you are conversant with scripture and have a solid comprehension of it in order to present yourself approved unto God and effectively communicate the truths of his word to others.

In a similar vein, you can navigate through life more gracefully when you comprehend God’s word.

4 – Be Full of the Holy Spirit and Wisdom
Your life will reflect that of Christ, and your service will have a significant and lasting influence and transformative effect on others when you are filled with the Holy Spirit and wisdom. This is due to the fact that those you serve will be led to God as they witness God’s character and nature clearly displayed in your life.

5 – Have a Good Reputation
Without possessing good character and leading a holy life, you cannot serve effectively as a church worker. This is because in contrast to human doings, the church is made up of human beings. For this reason, you must show the utmost respect to the people you serve.

The Bible says in Proverbs 22 vs 1 MSG that, “A sterling reputation is better than striking it rich; a gracious spirit is better than money in the bank”. This underscores the fact that in the world of service, your reputation is more valuable than your position or wealth.

6 – Dependability
Can we count on you to always be available?
Can we rely on you to get the job done creatively, efficiently, innovatively and wholeheartedly?
Can we depend on you to take the initiative and fill in the gaps where necessary?

Please realize dear church worker, that if you are not dependable, you cannot be effective.

7 – Be Teachable
Humility is the bedrock of service because it makes you teachable, and teachability sets you up for greatness. To stay effective in service, you must be ever learning, ever evolving, and ever adaptable as no matter how highly placed you are in the hierarchy of leadership as a church worker, you are neither perfect nor immune to learning.

8 – Possess Excellent Relational Skills
Consider yourself a member of the body as a church worker. While serving, you will collaborate with other parts of the body and as you interact with them, it is important that you do so in a way that fosters goodwill.

For the church’s vision and mission to be fulfilled, it is incumbent upon you to be an invaluable teamnplayer.

Dear church worker, ultimately, God is the rewarder of your service so serve with your whole heart as unto the Lord.

The Importance of Devotion

Devotion is a crucial aspect of the Christian faith. It involves dedicating oneself to God and living a life that is pleasing to Him. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of devotion and how it can impact our relationship with God.

Firstly, devotion helps us to grow in our faith. When we spend time in prayer, reading the Bible, and worshiping God, we are able to deepen our understanding of who God is and what He desires for our lives. This, in turn, strengthens our faith and helps us to trust God more fully.

Secondly, devotion helps us to stay focused on God. In a world that is full of distractions, it is easy to lose sight of what is truly important. By setting aside time for devotion, we are able to center our minds and hearts on God, which helps us to stay focused on Him throughout the day.

Thirdly, devotion helps us to overcome temptation. When we are devoted to God, we are less likely to be swayed by the temptations of the world. This is because our hearts are filled with a love for God that is stronger than any desire for sin.

Finally, devotion helps us to experience the joy of the Lord. When we are devoted to God, we are able to experience His presence in our lives. This brings us a deep sense of joy that cannot be found anywhere else.

In conclusion, devotion is an essential aspect of the Christian faith. It helps us to grow in our faith, stay focused on God, overcome temptation, and experience the joy of the Lord. As we make a habit of devoting ourselves to God, we will find that our relationship with Him grows stronger and more meaningful with each passing day.

Psalm 37:4 (NIV) – “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Avoid Gossip and Mind Your Own Business

Gossip is a harmful habit that can cause a lot of pain and damage to individuals and communities. As Christians, we are called to love one another and to treat others with respect and kindness. Here are a few thoughts on how we can avoid gossip and focus on minding our own business:

1. Speak only what is true and helpful: In the book of Ephesians 4:25 and 4:29, we are encouraged to speak only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs. This means we should avoid spreading rumors or sharing information that is not true or helpful.

2. Focus on our own faults: Instead of gossiping about others, we should focus on our own faults and work on improving ourselves. This will help us to become more compassionate and understanding towards others.

3. Pray for those we are tempted to gossip about: When we are tempted to gossip about someone, we should instead pray for them. This will help us to see them in a more positive light and to have compassion for their struggles.

4. Seek forgiveness when necessary: If we have engaged in gossip or hurt someone with our words, we should seek forgiveness and make amends. This will help to repair relationships and build trust.

Remember that as Christians, we are called to love one another and to treat others with kindness and respect. By focusing on our own faults and avoiding gossip, we can create a more positive and uplifting community.

The Joy of Serving Others

As Christians, we are called to love and serve others just as Jesus did. In Philippians 2:4, it says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” This means that we should not only focus on our own needs and desires, but also on the needs of those around us.

Serving others can bring great joy and fulfillment to our lives. When we take the time to help someone in need, we are showing them the love and compassion of Christ. It can be as simple as lending a listening ear to a friend who is going through a tough time, or volunteering at a local charity.

One of the greatest examples of serving others is found in John 13:1-17, where Jesus washes the feet of his disciples. This was a task typically reserved for servants, but Jesus humbled himself and took on the role of a servant to show his disciples the importance of serving others.

When we serve others, we are also serving God. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” By serving others, we are showing our love and obedience to God.

So let us strive to look out for the interests of others, just as Christ did. Let us serve with joy and humility, knowing that we are serving God and bringing glory to his name.

Navigating Moments of Trial

In life, we all face moments of trials and tribulations. These are the moments that test our faith and make us question everything we believe in. However, as Christians, we know that these moments are not meant to break us but to make us stronger. In fact, James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed during these moments of trials, but it’s important to remember that God is always with us. He never leaves us nor forsakes us (Deuteronomy 31:6). He is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). We can take comfort in knowing that we are not alone in our struggles.

Furthermore, we can find hope in the fact that God uses our trials to shape us into the person He wants us to be. Romans 5:3-5 says, “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

So, when you’re going through a moment of trial, remember that it’s not the end of the road. It’s just a bump in the road that’s meant to strengthen you. Keep your faith in God, and trust that He will see you through. Pray for His guidance and strength, and lean on your brothers and sisters in Christ for support. Remember, “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5).

The Secret of Enhanced Living

Son: Dad, of all our neighbours, I noticed that Mr. Johnson is always happy and cheerful especially when he gives. But he’s getting old, if he keeps giving, won’t he become poor?

Dad: (Smiling): That’s a brilliant question Kevin. Take a walk with me let’s talk about giving.

Thrilled by the opportunity to be outdoors, Kevin jumped to his feet, held his father’s hand and pulled away. He couldn’t wait to learn more about giving.

Dad: Kevin, giving is an attitude not an amount. It is a mental health principle that cascades into every area of life and enables the giver to live a healthy and happy life.

Mr. Johnson is always happy especially when he gives because he understands that we steward the gifts we give. Those gifts neither own nor control us.

People who lack this understanding act as though the gifts own them and are, therefore, unhappy to give because they think that by giving, they have less. This is far from the truth.

Giving is a universal principle and an investment for eternity. 1 Timothy 6 reveals that when we give, we are storing up treasure for ourselves in heaven.

Kevin: (Wide eyed): We are?

Dad: (Smiling): Yes, we are son, God takes note. Do you remember what John 3 vs 16 says?

Kevin recites it excitedly.

Dad: Excellent son. John 3 vs 16 reveals that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. This goes to show that the nature of God is the nature of giving and since we were created in the image and likeness of God, giving is also our nature.

Kevin: Dad, you mean that whenever Mr. Johnson gives, he is acting like God?

Dad: Exactly!

That verse also demonstrates that the nature of love is the nature of giving. That’s why when we give to people, we afford them the opportunity to experience God’s love.

Kevin: So people now know the love of God because of Mr. Johnson.

Dad: (Smiling): Yes son.
He continues.

Dad: Furthermore, John 3 vs 16 reveals the purpose of giving which is to meet needs. God gave his son because the world needed salvation and redemption from sins. It is worthy of note that that singular act transformed the world and changed the course of history forever. This goes to show that when we give to meet the needs of others, our giving makes tangible impact and a positive difference in the world.

Kevin: (Understanding the line of thought): That’s why Mr. Johnson is always happy and cheerful when he gives.

Dad: That’s right Kevin.

Dad: You see one characteristic of giving is that it places premium value on the receivers rather than discriminate against them.
God loved the world and gave his son not because the world loved him in return, not because the world would value or appreciate his gift, not even because the world was worthy of his gift. God gave his most priced gift in the person of his son to an undeserving world because He placed premium value on the world.

Kevin: (Looks at his father shocked): That must be the reason Mr. Johnson bought food items for the couple that live down the road even though they are quite troublesome.

Dad: (chuckles): Yes son, that’s why.

Kevin: But dad, I don’t see the people Mr. Johnson gives to giving back to him as much as he gives to them.

Dad: That’s true but it doesn’t change the fact that giving confers rewards on the giver. You see when God gave his only begotten son, he gained many sons and daughters who believe in him and, therefore, have everlasting life.
So Mr. Johnson receives rewards for his acts of kindness in ways we may not know of.

Besides, apart from receiving rewards, there are many benefits derivable from giving. Some of them include:

Giving promotes physical health by reducing stress, and fighting low self-esteem and depression. This is because giving naturally builds a person’s confidence thereby naturally repelling self-hatred. You’d agree with me that this can increase and enhance a person’s lifespan.

That’s not all. Giving promotes social connection and improves relationships because it makes us selfless. When God gave his only begotten son, he wasn’t focused on himself, he was focused on meeting the need of the world. This sacrifice restored the relationship between man and God.

It would interest you to know that when we embrace giving, we introduce people to the quality of life God designed for humanity and by implication, cause his kingdom to come as his will is done on earth. Note that giving isn’t limited to money or gifts. It can be giving time, care, your abilities, advice, assistance, etc.

I’ll close by saying this: Giving influences our lives directly and indirectly so, if we want to change our lives, we must change the way we give. This is because giving is a spiritual transaction that provokes spiritual and physical supplies.

Kevin: (Wide eyed): Dad, I want to be a happy and cheerful giver like Mr. Johnson. I’ll start by helping him offload the things in his car.

And off he went before his dad could say a word.

Mr. Steven just smiled to himself happy that Kevin had learnt vital lessons in giving and was excited to put them to practice.

Millicent

At 25, Millicent was ready to spend the rest of her life with her love interest. While she looked forward to the wedding joyfully, she was more excited about what lay ahead of them beyond the day’s event.

The simple reason was because despite the fact that Mill as she was fondly called had been in a few relationships in the past, they had been nothing quite like this one.

This relationship was so life transforming it changed the way she thought, spoke, behaved, and lived. The more time she spent knowing and understanding her love interest, the better her approach to life issues and people became.

Everyone who knew Mill knew that everything about her had changed for the better as a result of this new relationship. The transformation was so evident, it made others want to have a similar experience.

This is what spending time with and understanding the word of God does in the life of an individual. It gives you an origin-to-destiny perspective of life and
provides the spiritual GPS that helps you navigate through the whole spectrum moment by moment.

The Bible helps you understand the person of God and his plans. It also helps you understand who you are and how you feature in God’s master plan.

God desires to have a more intimate relationship with you. He wants you to spend quality time with his word today and watch it find meaning and expression in your life.

As we come before God

This morning we are praying for ourselves, therefore, present yourself before God with a heart of thanksgiving. He was faithful to take you through the first quarter of this year and has brought you into the second quarter. Thank him for the gift of the new.

Ask him to sanctify and bless each day of this month and order your steps aright in the paths of peace and righteousness.

Declare that the sun, the rain, the forces of the day and night will work in your favour this month.

Decree that no weapon fashioned against you will prosper. Command the covering of the Lord over yourself that you will not encounter any accident as you travel.

Declare open heavens over yourself.

Speak forth joy, peace, favour, success, progress, prosperity and open doors for yourself this month.
