Lessons from Decapolis
Our spirit lives in our body which the Bible refers to as the flesh. When a person is saved, the spirit is redeemed immediately but the body (flesh) isn't redeemed. It will receive its redemption at the Resurrection Morning. This is why priority should be given to the spirit so that it will guide the actions of the flesh.
This explains Jesus' approach to the people of Decapolis. At the 3-day meeting he held with them, he concentrated on meeting their spiritual needs first. He spent quality nourishing their spirits with the word because he knew that when the spirit is taken care of, the flesh will take care of itself. After meeting their spiritual need, he took the liberty to meet their physical need which was hunger. As a good shepherd, he ensured that their flesh and spirit where nourished.
As believers, this is the order we are to follow. Sadly, what obtains today is that many invest heavily in the flesh and ignore the spirit. If this describes you, you can retrace your steps by going to God in prayer and he will restore you. When you are restored, give priority to nourishing your spirit and you will be the better for it.
