Purpose in the Ordinary: Discovering God in the Everyday

What is worship to you?

Is it lifted hands, closed eyes, focused attention, singing songs of adoration to God? Or busts of joy, tears, and excitement in the big moments of breakthroughs, answered prayers, or major life changes?

Often, we think worship is an event so we look for God in ‘special moments’ but what if we begin to approach worship as a lifestyle where we see God in the ‘ordinary’ affairs of our lives? In our commute to work, our meal preps, when helping a friend or a stranger, or even sleeping. Every moment of our lives carries divine purpose when seen through the eyes of faith. Colossians 3 vs 17 reminds us, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” This means that everything we do can be an act of worship and an opportunity to glorify God right where we are.

Seeing God in Everyday Moments

On many occasions, we underestimate how much our daily routines shape our faith. The way we treat people, handle stress, or respond to challenges can become acts of worship. Jesus Himself spent most of His life doing everyday work as a carpenter before beginning His public ministry. That shows us that God values the quiet moments of our lives, as well as the stage moments. When we approach our work with gratitude and excellence, little things like kindness, patience, or diligence can reflect God’s character to those around us.

Finding purpose in everything we do also requires slowing down to notice God’s presence. In 1 Kings 9 vs 11 – 12, Elijah expected God in the wind, earthquake, and fire, but He came instead in a gentle whisper. Likewise, God often speaks through stillness, simplicity, and the subtle blessings we overlook (a smile or a word of encouragement).

Faithfulness in Little Things
If life feels repetitive or uneventful, remember that God does His best work in hidden places. Growth, patience, and faith are often formed in seasons of quiet obedience to God. Galatians 6 vs 9 reminds us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Keep showing up, keep serving, and keep trusting that your faithfulness matters.

In the end, being God-focused in our everyday lives is about living with awareness, knowing that every breath, every task, and every relationship interests Him and can bring glory to Him. When we live this way, what seems ordinary becomes extraordinary, and our daily lives become unending moments of worship- a canvas for God’s grace and purpose.
