Dealing with Doubt and Questioning Your Faith
At some point in life, many believers wrestle with questions about their faith. It may be during a season of suffering, a period of silence in prayer, or when faced with tough life decisions. Doubt is often seen as weakness, but in reality, it is part of the human journey of faith. The Bible itself shows us that even great men and women of God struggled with questions, yet God met them in their doubt and strengthened their faith.
Consider Thomas, often called “Doubting Thomas” (John 20:24-29). He wanted proof of the risen Christ before believing. Jesus did not shame him but instead revealed Himself, telling him to stop doubting and believe. Similarly, John the Baptist, the very one who prepared the way for Jesus, sent his disciples to ask if Jesus was truly the Messiah (Matthew 11:2-3). These stories remind us that God understands our doubts and invites us to bring them honestly to Him.
Faith Grows Through Honest Questions
Rather than running from doubt, we are encouraged to seek God in the midst of it. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” Our questions can become doorways to deeper understanding, stronger trust, and a more authentic relationship with God. When we search the Scriptures, pray honestly, and seek wise counsel, doubt can lead us to a more mature and resilient faith.
Community Helps Strengthen Belief
Dealing with doubt should not be done in isolation. Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us to encourage one another and not give up meeting together. Sharing our struggles with trusted fellow believers, pastors, or mentors allows us to gain perspective, receive encouragement, and see how others have overcome similar seasons of doubt. You can also be strengthened by discovering how the church goes beyond just buildings and Sunday gatherings (backlink the article on this topic), reminding us that faith is best nurtured in community.
God Welcomes Our Honest Hearts
God is not intimidated by our questions. In fact, Psalm 34:18 assures us that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Bringing our doubts before Him in prayer is a way of drawing near, not pulling away. Like the father who cried out to Jesus, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24), we too can ask God to strengthen our wavering faith.
Final Encouragement
Doubt does not disqualify us from God’s love—it is often the soil where stronger faith is born. When we face questions, let’s not run from God but run to Him, trusting that He will meet us with grace, wisdom, and truth.
